| Message | The reason we want larger exhaust pipes is to reduce the restriction of flow after the turbine. We have to go to such a larger pipe (3") over the size of the manifold runners due to the some 25 feet of pipe after the turbine. Having a 1.5" exhaust pipe to the mufflers would produce significant backpressure and restriction, resulting in increased lag and poor top end performance. Appropriately, if you used 3" runners from the head to the collector, you would be introducing such a large change in velocity of the gases (fast out of the head, slowing to fill the 3" pipe, and then being accelerated again into the turbine scroll) and this would not only create turbulent flow, but also suffer from a large degree of thermal loss as the increased surface area of the runner will soak a lot of heat up from that slow-moving air.
